Lagos To Commence Controlled Demolition Of Distressed 25-Storey GNI House On October 15
Lagos State Government has announced plans to commence the controlled demolition of the structurally distressed Great Nigeria Insurance House, GNI House, on Lagos Island on Thursday, October 15, 2026, as part of measures to protect lives and property.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the demolition followed structural assessments by relevant agencies which confirmed that the building posed a significant risk to public safety.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the exercise would be carried out in a controlled and professional manner in line with global best practices to prevent possible incidents and safeguard lives and property.
He stated that the immediate surroundings of the building would be cordoned off during the operation, while access to the affected area would be restricted to ensure public safety.
According to him, temporary traffic diversions would be introduced on adjoining streets to facilitate the demolition and protect motorists and other road users.
He noted that the exercise could generate some noise and dust, urging residents, traders and business owners in the neighbourhood to exercise patience and cooperate with emergency responders and traffic management officials.
The LASEMA permanent secretary advised motorists and members of the public to avoid the affected area as much as possible, use alternative routes where necessary and comply strictly with safety instructions and diversion signs.
He said LASEMA, in collaboration with other relevant state agencies, would be on ground to coordinate safety arrangements and ensure the operation proceeded smoothly without harm to members of the public.
The permanent secretary appealed to residents and businesses in the area to support the exercise, stressing that the intervention was necessary to reduce risks associated with the distressed structure.
He appreciated Lagos residents for their cooperation and understanding, reiterating the agency’s commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to make the state safer for everyone.
