Lagos Moves To Enforce Building Standards As LASBCA Restates Commitment To Compliance
The Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, has restated its commitment to ensure that all building construction activities in the state follow approved building plans, standards and regulations.
The assurance was given by the General Manager of LASBCA, Gbaye Florence, when she received executive members of the Property and Environment Writers Association of Nigeria, PEWAN, who paid her a courtesy visit at the agency’s headquarters in Ikeja.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Affairs of LASBCA, Adu Ademuyiwa, the visit by PEWAN was to congratulate the General Manager on her appointment and to discuss areas of partnership ahead of the association’s 2026 Annual Conference coming up in October.
Welcoming the delegation, Gbaye Florence thanked PEWAN for the visit and praised the association for its consistent professional coverage of the built environment sector in Lagos State.
She said the media plays a key role in creating public awareness and supporting government programmes, adding that government cannot achieve its goals without the support of stakeholders.
She reaffirmed that LASBCA remains determined to strengthen compliance to building regulations in order to promote a safer, resilient and sustainable built environment for residents of Lagos.
The LASBCA boss also called on PEWAN to help create more awareness about the recently launched Lagos State Building Insurance Scheme. She said the scheme encourages property owners and developers, including those with existing and ongoing projects, to get Non-Liability Insurance Policies to provide protection and reduce financial losses from unexpected building incidents.
She further urged journalists to increase public enlightenment on the state government’s digital transformation in physical planning and building control, especially the newly introduced Electronic Physical Planning Permit System, EPPPS.
According to her, the EPPPS allows property owners and developers to apply for building permits and approvals online, making the process faster, seamless and more convenient without physical bottlenecks.
Gbaye also assured that LASBCA is ready to partner with PEWAN for its upcoming annual conference, saying such collaboration will improve synergy among stakeholders and help the public better understand the agency’s responsibilities.
She added that institutional bodies should be part of LASBCA’s work because their experience will help bring sanity to the built environment through advocacy for compliance. She noted that this was the reason Lagos State Government introduced the Certified Accreditors Programme, which is a Public-Private Partnership initiative.
Earlier, the Chairman of PEWAN, Mrs Okwy Iroegbue, congratulated Gbaye Florence on her appointment and commended LASBCA for its efforts in ensuring buildings in Lagos are built according to approved standards to promote safe and habitable communities and reduce building collapse.
Iroegbue said PEWAN is the umbrella body for journalists reporting property, housing, urban development, construction and environmental issues in Nigeria.
She disclosed that in the last two years, members of the association have published over 400 stories on issues like building collapse, climate resilience, housing deficit, green construction and urban regeneration.
She said, We do not just report problems; we also report solutions, innovations and the people getting it right.
She also reaffirmed the association’s commitment to maintain a cordial and mutually beneficial relationship with LASBCA.
