Sanwo-Olu Opens AFA Bridge on Agric-Isawo Road in Ikorodu, Ends Years of Flooding for Residents
Relief for Ikorodu: LASG Opens AFA Bridge Section on Agric-Isawo Road to Traffic
It was celebration on Tuesday in Ikorodu as the Lagos State Government officially opened the inbound section of the AFA Bridge on Agric–Isawo Road to motorists, bringing an end to years of flooding and traffic gridlock in the axis.
The opening followed an inspection tour of ongoing road and bridge projects by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola, alongside the Permanent Secretary, Office of Infrastructure, Engr. Olutokunbo Oyenuga, and other technical directors.
“No More Driving Through Floodplain” – LASG Announces Bridge Opening
At the Asolo Bridge section of the Agric-Isawo-Konu-Arepo Road project, Engr. Daramola confirmed that significant progress has been made.
“I’m happy to tell you that the inbound section of AFA Bridge on Agric–Isawo road has been opened to traffic. Commuters can now safely use this section of the Bridge. It’s bye to driving through the floodplain,” he said.
He noted that work is still ongoing on the outbound section. Motorists were urged to obey speed limits, follow traffic management signs, and avoid illegal bus stops around the bridge. Pedestrians were also advised to use designated walkways for safety.
Ikorodu Leaders, Residents Hail Sanwo-Olu
Community leaders described the intervention as long overdue and a sign that government is listening.
Hon. Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju, Chairman of Ikorodu West LCDA, commended LASG for addressing the challenges faced by residents and pledged to work with stakeholders to ensure proper maintenance of the infrastructure.
The Baale of Ajagunro-Owutu, Chief Orepitan Iwofun, said residents of Isawo had endured hardship for years. “The opening of the completed section is a welcome relief,” he stated, promising to mobilise okada and tricycle riders to support government directives.
Abiodun Dare Sunday, General Secretary of CDC Ikorodu West LCDA, captured the mood:
“After years of patience and inconvenience, relief is finally here. No more wallowing through floodwater. No more climbing the staircase to get to the Bridge Deck.”
Resident Emmanuel Dickson added:
“I don’t believe I will drive and cross this road today. But to the glory of God, it’s like a dream come true. Kudos to Governor Sanwo-Olu.”
Other Projects Inspected: Itowolo Bridge, Maidan-Patele Link Bridge
The team also inspected the rehabilitation of Itowolo Bridge and reconstruction of Aruna U-Turn in Ikorodu. The Baale of Itowolo, Chief Sikiru Kolawole Aregbeshola, thanked the state government, saying the project “will greatly improve movement and make transportation easier and safer.”
In Mile 12, Kosofe LGA, the team visited the Maidan-Patele Link Bridge. Resident Engr. Dennis Adeola said the upgrade from pedestrian-only to vehicular bridge has ended 4 years of hardship.
“For years we crossed with canoes. It was dangerous, especially during rain. We sincerely appreciate LASG for restoring safe access,” he said.
Engr. Daramola assured residents that all projects will be delivered on schedule and urged Lagosians to take ownership and avoid abuse of public infrastructure.
“Let’s all take possession of the road. Let’s manage it well. It’s taxpayers’ money that is used to provide it,” he said.
Why this matters:
The partial opening of AFA Bridge is expected to ease traffic, eliminate seasonal flooding, and improve connectivity between Ikorodu, Isawo, Konu, and Arepo communities.
