Nigerian agents partner US realtors to drive investment, promote professionalism

For reasons bordering on driving real estate investment, promoting professionalism, and putting Nigeria on the global map, Association of Estate Agents in Nigeria (AEAN) has partnered realtors in America under the aegis of National Association of Realtors in the United States of America (NAR).

With NAR, AEAN has worked ceaselessly to lay the foundation for sustainable development in the Nigerian real estate sector. The partnership has reached a point where it has necessitated a conference to be hosted by AEAN in Lagos from April 9 – 12, 2024.

Adeniyi Tinubu, a Global Real Estate Advisor and AEAN’s National Publicity Secretary, disclosed these to journalists at a press briefing he addressed jointly with Osagie Odiase, National Secretary, and Uche Jinwa, Assistant National Publicity Secretary, in Lagos recently.

He recalled that AEAN conferences had proven to be high level , interactive and problem-solving, pointing out that this year’s edition with the theme, ‘Building Enduring Partnerships for a Better Future’ has been taken several notches higher as a result of the partnership with NAR.

Beyond the conference, Tinubu hinted that they would be hosting their partners from the NAR on a Trade Mission which, he said, promises to be a glass-ceiling-shattering event . The partners would also be taken on facility tours to show them the tremendous investment potential in Nigeria.

“This year, the conference is going to have a highly specialized training in Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS) designation to be facilitated by the NAR.

This designation allows Nigerians to become certified international property specialists and gives them access to an international market, international buyers and an opportunity to assist clients overseas to make smart real estate investments all over the world,” he said.

Tinubu, who is also the chairman, AEAN Conference Planning Committee, explained that the training would equip people who partake in it with the right tools , knowledge, research and network to achieve the aforementioned at an affordable pricing for all professionals. He assured that the payment for the training comes with automatic membership of the NAR.

“In this same conference we have also partnered with foreign facilitators and speakers to further educate Nigerian real estate brokers on industry trends and international best practices to become licensed realtors,” he said.

He disclosed that one of AEAN’s aims is to train and retrain real estate brokers, assuring that this will be showcased during the conference . “There will be a proptech session that will be delineating and exposing the intricacies of how technology should be applied in real estate in a manner that encourages sustainability practices as well as growth and development in the sector,” he said.

(AEAN) is a brainchild of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV). It came as a response to the bastardization of an aspect of the estate surveying and valuation profession, particularly estate agency, which has been infiltrated by non-professionals, also known as quacks.

Tinubu attributed the poor public perception and image of real estate brokerage and, by extension, of the profession, to the activities and incursion of these quacks into the practice, disclosing that NIESV, in a bid to reverse this trend, decided to set up the AEAN.

He called for legislative intervention in this sector, noting that the effect of the lack of regulation of estate agency has fostered haphazard practices such as overpricing of housing units, letting of substandard structures and houses among others by unqualified agents.
